Document search in Vertical Lift Portal uses Examine, Umbraco’s native Lucene-based indexing and search engine. Document names and configured metadata are indexed for fast keyword searches.
Vertical Lift Portal provides three widgets that work together to support searching and filtering:
- Search Box: Allows users to search by keyword.
- Search Navigation: Allows users to filter by category.
- Search Results: Displays the results of the selected search and filtering criteria.
Users can combine category filtering with a keyword search to narrow their results. For example, a user can first select a category and then enter a keyword to search within that category.
Note: Users must select the category before entering a keyword. Searching by keyword first and then filtering by category is not currently supported.
To search within PDF files, an additional PDF indexing component extracts the document text and adds it to a searchable index. Developers can combine this with the website’s content index to return matching pages and PDF documents in a single set of search results. See Umbraco documentation for more details.
